It seems we’ve been in lockdown for what feels like forever; arguably many of us have never spent so much time confined to our own homes. While that has meant a surprising sartorial turn to loungewear, with cozy sweat sets and athleisure taking over our coveted closet space, it has left us dreaming of what we’ll be wearing after quarantine.
Taking inspiration from the spring/summer 2020 runways, our team have pulled together the outfits they’re most excited to wear once “normal” life resumes. Hopeful for warmer weather and excited by the prospect of being reunited with friends and family at intimate gatherings, parties and even holidays, we’re lusting over everything from sleek and summery everyday outfits to party dresses, beach-ready looks and day-to-night outfits.
From strappy, South of France-inspired dresses and bags by Jacquemus and cult-loved leather pieces by Bottega Veneta to contemporary essentials by the likes of Khaite, The Row and Victoria Beckham, there are looks to suit every style and occasion. Light Summer Outfits
Kate Davidson-Hudson - Co-Founder, Editor-in-Chief, Creative Director
I love the easy, luxe elegance of everything Daniel Lee did for Bottega Veneta this season. Rich leathers for day, rendered in easy silhouettes and more statement accessories combine for a look that perfectly taps my after quarantine mood. I’m also obsessed with everything Simon Porte Jacquemus did for his eponymous label in SS20. His cool color-plays and perfect balance of youthfulness tempered by a sense of sophistication is exactly what I want to wear all summer long.
Ultimately the theme for my approach to fashion this summer, in particular, is light, optimistic and nothing that tries too hard.
Elevated Everyday Outfits
Alyssa Montemurro - Senior Beauty Editor
After spending months indoors, the thing I’ll look forward to most after quarantine ends is simply having the opportunity to go back out and explore the city that I love so dearly. I plan to take advantage of every opportunity that I have to venture out to new places and experience as much as I can—whether it’s the latest must-see art exhibition or a trendy new bar opening downtown. That said, I plan on investing in pieces that can look chic and pulled together in an instant, but still feel relaxed and low-maintenance enough to fit my casual, on-the-go lifestyle.
One of my absolute favorite looks of the season is this one from Givenchy. It’s cool and right for the moment, yet is centered around pieces that I can wear for seasons to come. For day, I’ll dress it down with my favorite Veja sneakers and at night, I’ll elevate the look by adding a pair of strappy, barely-there sandals. Similarly, I love the nonchalant attitude of this all-white look from The Row. It radiates an inherent coolness and effortless sense of style that seems to suggest one just threw this look on and walked out the door without so much as a second thought—a practice I’ll always aspire to.
Finally, I’ll forever reach for a perfectly tailored, minimalist suit and this one from CELINE fits the bill to a “T.” Its easy, relaxed tailoring makes it feel cool rather than stuffy, which means I can throw it on with a T-shirt and crisp white sneakers and feel comfortable yet perfectly put together, no matter where my city adventures may take me after quarantine has lifted.
Tropical Summer Two-Piece Outfits
Gretty Garcia - Features and Special Projects Assistant Editor
I’m absolutely obsessed with two-pieces. I can’t cite any materials that will back me up on this, but I feel as though they make me look taller than my usual 5 foot frame. Brandon Maxwell’s iteration comes in a tropical green hue that looks amazing when paired pieces with one of my all-time favorite brands, Jacquemus—specifically its Le Petit Baci Raffia Tote.
When it comes to footwear, my tastes have definitely been aligning with Bottega Veneta’s aesthetics. These minimalist black heels are the perfect pair that can go with everything from casual denim paired and white tee looks or with something more elevated. Finally, I think that a little bit of gilded jewels go a long way, especially when they’re artfully juxtaposed. Cartier’s evergreen Love Bracelet and Azlee’s Modern Byzantine Emerald & Diamond Large Coin Necklace pair beautifully, and the necklace’s hints of green emerald completely tie the look together. I can’t wait to wear this look out…hopefully after quarantine on a tropical getaway!
Monochrome Summer Outfit
Jaclyn Bloomfield - Senior Market Editor
I will admit it, I’m not a person that wears color often, and by often, I really mean hardly ever. Much like other New Yorkers, my wardrobe consists of hues like black and white, with a touch of neutrals for when I’m feeling “out there.”
After quarantine, I cannot wait to put together some looks that don’t involve lounge or activewear; I’m excited to attend events that require me to actually look pulled together. This season, I’m really gravitating towards brands that focus on closet essentials. I’ve been keeping a close eye on Bottega Veneta, Khaite, Totême and Wardrobe.NYC. Nearly everything they produce, I would wear day in and day out—I really am not exaggerating. I’m currently coveting Bottega Veneta’s leather shorts combo from the SS20 collection. Equal parts street and tailored, this combo will turn us all into effortlessly chic ingenues. Another black separates duo that I can’t stop thinking about is the sarong and deconstructed button down styling from Khaite’s SS20 show. I love how Cate Holstein takes the idea of the sarong and a button down blouse and turns them into something that is so ready for a summer in the city that you forget its origins are at the beach. Throw on the perfect white sneaker or dress it up with a strappy sandal, either way, I’m here for both of these looks!
Lastly, one of my favorite pieces for summer, season after season remains the LWD (little white dress). No matter the occasion, it remains one of my go-to pieces for the warmer months. This flirty one by LoveShackFancy is at the top of my list. Aptly named the Bonita dress, it makes me want to go out dancing with friends…which is perhaps the thing that I look forward to the most after quarantine.
Versatile Summer Dressing
Samantha Greenspan Weiss - Senior Stylist
I miss throwing on a sun dress with sandals and running out the door to the office. I truly cannot wait for the day, after quarantine, where we get to do it again! For spring/summer, I tend to gravitate towards a soft, muted color palette as the simplicity of these looks feels so pure and serene—especially after all these months in isolation. I’m so looking forward to the long summer days spent outdoors and beautiful nights barefoot on the beach bbq’ing with family and friends.
This Alanui wrap sweater is hands down the coziest, most effortless item and 100% worth the splurge. All of these items can be worn from day to night and as a result, will be seasonal staples for my summer 2020 wardrobe and beyond.
Minimal Day-to-Night Outfit
Nav Gill - Senior Editor
I’ll admit it, as an athleisure enthusiast, I haven’t been completely hating quarantine dressing; it’s given me the excuse I never really needed to live exclusively in cozy loungewear sets. With that being said, I am looking forward to life on the outside and having a reason to get properly dressed-up again. I’ve been obsessing over the sleek, structured pieces from Dion Lee’s SS20 show, particularly the simple white long-sleeve garter dress which I’d layer underneath the brand’s statement bonded bra in black for a striking yet minimal look.
Monochrome pieces remain, unsurprisingly, a key look for me—despite the promise of sunny, summer months. Instead of introducing vibrant colours into my wardrobe, I’ll embrace the elements with shorter hemlines and sheer fabrics. The aforementioned black bra will pair perfectly with Peter Do’s high-waisted white pants, which have a translucent, slim-leg cut from the thigh down. I ordered Prada’s timelessly chic white platform mules and they arrived, ironically, right in the middle of lockdown. While I have been wearing them around the house in the meantime, I truly can’t stop dreaming about teaming them with 1017 ALYX 9SM’s chain-detail minidress and buckle choker for an edgy look that’s perfect for partying into the wee hours with all my friends after quarantine.
