Head-to-Toe Yellow Is Spring 2022’s Most Optimistic Color Trend

Here are 6 ways to wear it.

If you were paying attention when Bottega green first came around, you know the importance of being on the pulse of a breaking color trend. Last summer, influencers, celebrities, and fashion insiders were all besotted by the grassy hue, while designers used leather pouches and strappy sandals as a canvas for it. Well, it’s time to make room in your closet for a new color trend—one that took over the Spring 2022 runways in one fell swoop. Presenting: lemon yellow.

Unlike its predecessor, yellow wasn’t just sprinkled in here and there via mini bags and shoes—models in full-on, head-to-toe yellow outfits swept the runways of nearly every Spring/Summer 2022 show. At Etro, it was all about lemon boyshorts and bowling shirts; at Chanel, creative director Virginie Viard dipped all things tweed in the sunny hue. Proenza Schouler, on the other hand, nailed two trends in one: marigold and fringe, which appeared together on the pier-turned-catwalk in several looks.

While it may seem a bit maximalist, the flamboyant color trend has its charms. Devoid of tricky print-mixing or color-blocking, yellow outfits are a foolproof option for days when you’re short on time. What's more: the hue is inherently timeless, ensuring maximum wear now and in the future.

1.

Mellow, Monochrome Yellow

This fashion week attendee went the pastel route, opting for a ribbed rollneck and straight-leg jeans in the optimistic hue. The secret to creating some variety? Go bright with accessories (strappy sandals and a crossbody, to be exact) for a look that’s less monochrome, more tonal.

2.

Canary Yellow Circle-Skirt

Not quite ready to fully commit? Dabble in the yellow outfit trend with a slip skirt and inky separates. Paris-based influencer Ellie Delphine went with a jabot blouse and black blazer, which brought the vibrant color back down to earth. Finish the look with a pair of slouchy, croc-effect boots, such as Totême’s Wide-Shaft pair.

3.

Mustard Midi Dress

Shake up the yellow color trend by giving it the Scandi style treatment. This attendee channeled it through a plaid, balloon-sleeved pussybow dress, which played nicely off her green boots. This look is for those that oppose the matchy-matchy craze, but still want to present a unified front.

4.

Pops of Lemon

2021 was all about vibrant, coordinated accessories, which influencer Leonie Hanne has down to a science. Her look presents all the clean-slate energy we welcome through spring months, accented with neon yellow sunglasses (Gucci) and sculptural sandals (Amina Muaddi). Wear this foolproof look to brunch with a few friends on that first 60-degree day.

5.

Butter Yellow Trench

Never one to shy away from an inspiring color story, editor, content creator, and social justice advocate Tamu McPherson already has the yellow outfit down-pat. Take a page out of her book and incorporate other bold hues in varying textures. Her blue satin slip dress and patent green mules each pack a punch, but without overpowering her butter-colored trench.

6.

Textured Tops

We can’t forget about yellow wares in unique, eye-catching patterns. Stylist Gabriella Karefa-Johnson layered a printed V-neck from Prada’s Fall/Winter 2021 collection over a crochet skirt. She then finished her eclectic look with some à la mode accessories from cult-favorite Italian heritage brand Bottega Veneta. (It was Milan Fashion Week, after all.)
