9 Handbag Hues That Are Dominating 2022 With Flying Colors

New season, new shade.

While neutrals thrive in the wintertime, spring belongs to bright, ebullient colors. We hear you, minimalists: adopting a wardrobe full of vibrant pinks and greens may be a no-go. Our suggestion? Colorful handbags, which pack all that oversaturated fun into bite-sized doses. A lively pop of color is exactly what a neutral palette needs to take it from staid to stylish.

Judging from the runways, designers were in agreement on a few shades for Spring/Summer 2022. Included in the crop are lemon yellows, candy pinks, and everything in between. Whether worn with a sundress or casual denim, searingly bright handbags will bring a sweet touch—not just to your warm-weather wardrobe, but through transitional seasons as well. Discover the colorful bouquet of new handbags for your perusal ahead.

1.

Very Peri

Pantone named periwinkle—aka, Veri Peri—as its 2022 Color of the Year for its “courageous creativity” and “spritely attitude.” This tracks with what we're seeing on the runways, as names like Lanvin and Loewe ran it home with lavender and lilac bags for March and beyond. Costume designer and stylist Zerina Akers proves that purples can double as a neutral with this monochromatic ensemble. Aim for the look with Burberry’s in-season Lola bag or Balenciaga’s punchy hourglass carryall. Celeb-favorite Brandon Blackwood also unveiled an update to its signature Mini Kendrick Trunk, covering it in purple terry cloth that feels ready for the pool and the club.

2.

Freshly Squeezed

In truth, we weren’t completely sold on electric orange until the catwalks convinced us. Proenza Schouler pushed tangerine from pastel shades to hues as bright as OJ, while saffron was the only color in sight on Christian Siriano’s runway. Wake up and smell the orange blossoms with Eddie Parker's new zesty bag topped with an acetate orange handle—carry in tow with a mimosa in hand for a the cutest coordination. Get the color trend with BOYY’s orange sherbert bag or Bottega Veneta’s rubber tote as well.

3.

Fruitful Fuchsia

Candy pink reigned supreme in 2021, but it's already on a comeback circuit for 2022. As for what's special about the saccharine shade, it’s shockingly more wearable than it seems—Jacquemus' new concisely-named Pink collection is proof. This is re-proven by this Fashion Week attendee, who donned a hot pink Saks Potts coat with Valentino’s crystal pavé Roman stud handheld. The neutral palette and casual jeans help bring the look down to earth while the outerwear and handbag combo is like a fairytale, materialized.

4.

Bubblegum, Bubblegum in a Dish

Which shade seems scarier, hot pink or pale pink? Trick question: neither should! Millennial pink may have slowed its roll, but it still has plenty of potential in the fashion world. Complement flushed cheeks with the newest blush-toned designer bags. Burberry’s TB shoulder bag is among the buzziest shapes of the moment,  while Givenchy’s crossbody is an optimal hands-free option for sightseeing on your summer travels. Speaking of summer, Prada’s Re-Edition 2005 bag comes in a raffia texture that's begging to ride first-class with you on all of your tropical getaways. Style the below with a sundress and sandals for an all-around flirty look.

5.

Technicolor Dream-Bag

We couldn't have a list of colorful handbags without calling out our favorite multi-hue carryalls on the market. Summer’s favorite totes will be akin to Chloé’s or Valentino’s knit bags (find below), which are made of woven raffia and braided leather. Dries Van Noten argues that the more fringe, the merrier with this stained watercolor shoulder bag. Soraya Hennessy’s bags are artisanally crocheted by hand, and this pastel rainbow is the perfect burst of energy that isn’t overbearing.

6.

Wear Your Green

Bottega green walked so that evergreen shades could run. From shamrock to Granny Smith, all types of greens are having a moment. We’re vouching for Jimmy Choo’s satin pouch and Loewe’s mini bowling bag, which happens to be one of 2022’s leading silhouette trends. Amina Muaddi’s bejeweled mini bags, on the other hand, have gained a cult following of their own, so it’s only a matter of time before spotting one of your style muses sporting this vibrant top-handle. Medea’s shopping totes are also a favorite amongst It-girls like Emily Ratajkowski. Plus, statement tote bags are about to be everywhere this year, so let the slime shade be your hue of choice.

7.

Canary Yellow

Going for a picnic? Don’t forget the mustard—handbags, that is. For spring and summer, edible shades of yellow are on the table. Contrary to its name, Staud’s 'Wallflower' shade is not for the faint of heart. You can also go ultra-trendy with By Far’s new Cush bag, which Megan Fox already has her hands on. Considering that this trendy accessories label has a stronghold over the celebrity scene, it’s safe to assume this gleeful number will sell out soon.

8.

Muy Calienté

Big Apple red is becoming less and less polarizing. Need proof? Just refer to Prada’s spring runway, where every bag was crimson. The statement shade is usually an accent, as with Christian Louboutin's signature bottoms or Mansur Gavriel’s cushy interiors. But these bags make a hard case for bringing spicy shades of rouge to the fashion forefront during the hottest months of the year. To embrace the unabashed appeal of scarlet red,  demand attention with the styles below.

9.

Blue Note

Nautical blue and maritime stripes go hand-in-hand with summer, but this year, designers have gone bold with the shade. Cobalt and cerulean made not-so-subtle appearances in a slew of SS22 collections (Christian Dior, Blumarine, and Tod’s are just some notable mentions) and we can’t stop ruminating on which one to choose—so maybe we’ll choose two. Simon Porte Jacquemus is never one to shy away from color, and this season, his smattering of blue bags are apropos of children's shape-sorting toys. Simon Miller weaves strips of blue vegan leather into a slouchy hobo shape that falls in lockstep with the hobo bag revival happening right now. Meanwhile, Tom Ford’s ruched satin bucket bag and Saint Laurent’s classic shoulder bag are trend-proof choices.
